Keysight E8491B HP Agilent IEEE-1394 PC Link to VXI
The Keysight HP Agilent E8491B is ideal for data acquisition applications transporting huge data blocks. This model is economical for test applications, especially when it is combined with Agilent’s E84XX mainframe series. When dealing with more than one VXI mainframe, an E8491B is inserted into every mainframe, then connected through the cable. They can be connected in a star, tree, or daisy-chain arrangement. A PC can support a maximum of 16 mainframes.
The model has a maximum data transfer rate of 14 MB/sec (16 bit or 32 bit), the maximum backplane burst rate is 13 MB/sec (16 bit), 27 MB/sec (32 bit), or 53 MB/sec (64 bit), and the maximum cable length is 4.5 inches between devices and 72 m total per system. The shared memory capacity for this model is 128 kB.
The Keysight E8491B has a C-size VXI Slot 0 module, along with a 4.5-meter cable. The IEEE-1394 portion of the E8491B model’s title references a high-speed serial bus. This is a new standard for sending data between consumer electronics and PCs. The data is sent through a set of twisted-pair cables; the remaining twisted-pair set is used for the clock. The IEEE-394’s affordability and simple to use interface are possible through simplified electronics. The receivers and transmitters are capable of taking care of addressing, initialization, protocol, and arbitration. Sending data through the IEEE-394 can be achieved as Asynchronous or Isochronous. These two varieties can occur on a single bus. The E8491B supports asynchronous data sending to safe identical access for every VXI mainframe.

Keysight E8491B HP Agilent- FAQ:
Question:
If I would like to order the PCI FireWire card (Option 001) for my E8491B, how do I know which part number to order?
Answer:
The part number is E8491-66503, which is the Solectron PCI FireWire card. The power cable is part number E8491-61613. With FireWire requirements, the power cable is needed.
Question:
With my E8491B, is it possible to use an IEEE-1394 FireWire cable longer than the 4.5 m. cable which came with my E8491B?
Answer:
If necessary, 15 more cables can be added to the first one to allow a complete system cable length of 72m.
Question:
How large is a “large block” of data when referring to the E8491B?
Answer:
A large block of data is at least 64 kbytes.
Question:
What are the differences between the E8491B and the E8491A?
Answer:
Every transfer for the E8491B has the capability to be 4 times larger than the E8491A because of the new PC plug-in cards. Also, software has been streamlined on the instrument and PC side, so transfers occur more swiftly. Lastly, the E8491B can perform 6.6 million back plane transfers per second, while the E8491A can perform 3.3 million per second.
Question:
I have a PC with a built-in FireWire interface. How can I know if it will work with the Keysight E8491B?
Answer:
The best performance can only be guaranteed while using the host adapter (PCI) card which comes with the E8491B, however most built-in FireWire interfaces do work properly with the E8491B. It can result in lower performance though.
