HP Agilent 6521A DC Power Supply

The 6521A DC Power Supply created by HP Agilent can be used for many applications in the laboratory and in the system. This model has adequate output current to power products including: klystrons, magnetrons, TWT’s, high-power gas lasers, backward-wave oscillators, electron-beam welding devices, and many more. The output voltage on this DC Power Supply can be set accurately and easily with a three-decade thumbwheel switch and a thumbwheel vernier which delivers 0.002% resolution. The HP Agilent 6521A DC Power Supply has an output of 0-1000 Vac, 0-200 mA, a load effect voltage of 0.005% or 20 mV, and a load effect current of 2% or 1 mA.

While the HP Agilent 6521A is in constant voltage operation, a single-turn current control permits the current limit point to be designated to any value in the current rating. While this DC Power Supply is in constant current operation, the current control alters the output current. At the same time, the voltage controls or thumbwheels deliver a voltage limit which can be changed. A helpful feature of the 6521A is the safeguard against reverse voltage that could be created by an active load. To ensure this DC Power Supply is safe from reverse current, the user has to pre-load the model with a dummy load to guarantee that the supply outputs current throughout the complete operating cycle of the load. The positive or negative terminal can be grounded. The other option is for the user to float the power supply at a maximum of 200 V above ground.

Question:

If my HP Agilent 6521A is powered on and there is not a load connected, is a ticking noise normal?

Answer:

If the model is on and there is not a load connected, the transformer will make a ticking noise. This is a standard occurrence and should not be cause for alarm.

Question:

If I am connecting or disconnecting load connectors, should the 6521A DC Power Supply be turned off?

Answer:

Yes, the 6521A DC Power Supply should be powered off before connecting or disconnecting the load connectors to prevent harm to the user caused by arcing.

Question:

Can the 6521A DC Power Supply be connected to other power supplies in parallel? If so, what is the most that can be connected at a time?

Answer:

Yes, the 6521A DC Power Supply can be linked in parallel to other power supplies. Two or more can be linked to deliver a total output current higher than that available from a single power supply.
